Kendall J Mowatt

picKendall J Mowatt is a North West Coast Native Artist with 25 years experience in carving, design and silkscreen prints. Kendall is a 'Master Carver' and favors working on totem poles, masks, feast bowls and plaques. Kendall has received his training from the renowned 'Ksan Carving School of Fine Arts located at the 'Ksan Indian Village.

Belonging to the Frog clan, Kendall is a man who reflects traditional cultural values and believes strongly in passing on our Gitksan traditions. Today, Kendall shares his expertise and talents in a mentorship capacity to the 'Youth Helping Youth Mentorship Program.'

Kendall is generous with his knowledge and often inspires awe as he imparts traditional knowledge along with artistic knowledge. One example, during a conversation with budding artists, Kendall explained the significance of the hummingbird for our culture; the Gitxsan word for hummingbird is T'sin and one of our beliefs is:

'T'sin' the hummingbird is known as the messenger
When you see a hummingbird, whisper a prayer
and T'sin will deliver your message to the creator

Kendall's explanation instantly inspired a sense of reflection and pride for those of us that heard.
